When I was looking for a good domain name for my website, I encountered with TLDs (Top level domain names such as .com, .org, .net) , sub-domains, redirectors and free domains. I was headed to purchase a .com domain. Thus I searched and decided to purchase www.psexam.com. It is from this one year I came to know about .tv domain.
At first immediately I accepted the general analogy that .tv is the domain name for television. The price of these domain names shocked. It was most expensive compared to .com or .org and any other top level domain names.
Then I forgot for all these times about .tv. Recently one in one of the newsletters I happened to read that .tv is the country domain for Tuvalu.
"Domain registrar and hosting company Go Daddy.com sells all sorts of domain extensions like .com and .org for their customers to suffix with, but have you ever heard of the extension .tv? No, it doesn't stand for television, although that would make the most sense. The .tv extension is actually for the islands that comprise Tuvalu, a small independent country not too far from Fiji."
Then I got confused. Making a few minutes searches on the net then I come to know the fact. I almost alway believe Wikipedia for these sort of information. Wikipedia clarifies:
Except for reserved names like .com.tv, .net.tv, .org.tv and others, any person in the world can register a .tv domain for a fee. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) because it is an abbreviation of the word 'television' (other similar ccTLDs are .me, .fm, .am, .cd, .dj and .mu). Such unconventional usage of TLDs in domain names are known as domain hacks.
Thus don't get confused! Be clear .tv is not the abbreviation of television!
